Memorial Day and summer gatherings are the perfect excuse to fire up the grill—and yes, that includes grilling the fruit for your cocktails. Grilling concentrates the fruit’s natural sugars and adds light charred notes that make this red wine sangria especially vibrant and flavorful.

This Grilled Fruit Sangria builds on a simple idea: toss seasonal fruit in cinnamon and sugar, grill briefly to caramelize, then combine with cabernet, brandy, triple sec and orange juice. Let it rest in the fridge so the wine can absorb those grilled juices, then top with sparkling water just before serving for a refreshing, fizzy finish.

Why Grill the Fruit?

Grilling the fruit enhances its natural sweetness and infuses subtle smoky, caramelized flavors into the sangria. Once the fruit hits the wine, it releases those concentrated juices and aromas, giving the cocktail more depth than simply adding raw fruit. And when the sangria is gone, the grilled fruit left in the bowl makes a delicious, boozy dessert spoonful.

Grilled fruit added to pitcher for sangria

Instructions

  1. Toss the peaches, apples, oranges and lemons with the ground cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar until evenly coated.
  2. Heat a grill to medium. Arrange the fruit on the grill and cook 2–4 minutes per side, or until the fruit has grill marks and begins to soften. Remove from the grill.
  3. Add the grilled oranges and lemons to a large pitcher or punch bowl. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently muddle them with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar to release juices and oils from the citrus.
  4. Add the grilled peaches and apples to the pitcher. Place the pitcher in the refrigerator for 20–30 minutes so the fruit cools before adding cold alcohol.
  5. Remove the pitcher from the refrigerator and pour in the cabernet, brandy, triple sec and orange juice. Stir to combine, then return to the refrigerator for at least one hour to let the flavors meld.
  6. To serve, optionally rim glasses by dipping each in lemon juice and then in a mix of 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons sugar.
  7. Add a handful of frozen grapes to each glass, fill the glass about three-quarters full with sangria, and top with sparkling water for fizz. Garnish with pieces of the grilled fruit if desired.

Tips and Serving Suggestions

  • Use a medium-bodied cabernet for structure; you can substitute another red if you prefer a lighter profile.
  • Grill fruit just until marked and slightly softened—overcooking will make it break down too much in the sangria.
  • Prepare the sangria a few hours ahead so the wine absorbs the grilled fruit flavors. It also makes entertaining easier.
  • This sangria pairs well with grilled meats, tacos, corn dishes and fresh summer desserts.
  • Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for 48 hours; the fruit will continue to infuse the wine, so flavor may intensify.
