This metabolism boosting breakfast smoothie is full of fruit and protein for a nourishing morning drink that tastes great and helps you start the day strong.

When the booking producer at the San Diego 6 Morning News Show invited me to talk about juicing and smoothies, I jumped at the chance to share some of my favorite morning drinks. This Metabolism Boosting Breakfast Smoothie is one I make often: it’s simple to prepare, loaded with whole fruit and Greek yogurt for protein, and brightened with ginger and cinnamon for warmth and flavor. It’s ideal for a quick breakfast, a post-workout refuel, or any time you want a refreshing, nutrient-dense drink.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup strawberries
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 1 banana
- 6 oz Greek yogurt
- 1 cup coconut water
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp flax seed (ground or whole)
- 1/2 cup ice
Instructions
1. Add the strawberries, blueberries and banana to a blender.

2. Add the Greek yogurt, coconut water, honey, grated ginger, cinnamon, flaxseed and ice.
3. Blend on high until smooth and creamy, pausing to scrape down the sides if needed. Pour into a tall glass and serve immediately.
Why this smoothie works
This combination balances fresh fruit with protein and healthy fats to keep you satisfied. Berries and banana provide antioxidants, fiber and natural sweetness. Greek yogurt boosts the protein content, while flaxseed adds omega-3s and extra fiber. Coconut water keeps the texture light and adds electrolytes for hydration. Ginger and cinnamon add flavor and a warming finish—both are commonly used to complement digestion and brighten flavor without added sugar.
Tips and variations
- Use frozen berries or a frozen banana for a thicker, colder smoothie without adding more ice.
- Swap coconut water for unsweetened almond milk or oat milk if you prefer a creamier texture.
- For a dairy-free version, replace Greek yogurt with a plant-based yogurt that provides similar creaminess.
- Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder for extra protein, especially after workouts.
- If you like more spice, increase cinnamon to 3/4 teaspoon or add a pinch of nutmeg.
- To boost fiber further, add a handful of spinach or a tablespoon of chia seeds—both blend easily and won’t alter the flavor much.

Serving and storage
Serve this smoothie immediately for the best texture and flavor. If you need to store it, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 24 hours. Separation may occur—just shake or stir before drinking. For on-the-go mornings, pour the smoothie into an insulated bottle to keep it chilled.
