A few years ago I threw an Oktoberfest-themed birthday for my husband and built this charcuterie board as the centerpiece. Paired with a beer tasting of several German brews, it was a crowd-pleaser. With the real Oktoberfest held each fall in Munich, this board brings the festival spirit home: pretzels and beer cheese, grilled bratwurst, savory mustards, German-style cheeses, pickles, and crunchy rye chips. Most ingredients are available at major grocery stores.

What you’ll need
- Cheeses – Choose a mix of creamy, mild, and sharp flavors. On my board I used:
- Beer cheese dip – A warm, melty dip that’s perfect for pretzels (prepare ahead and reheat before serving).
- Cambozola (triple cream blue) – mild, creamy, and slightly tangy.
- Aged Gouda – buttery with a deeper flavor as it ages.
Other great options: Emmentaler, Brie, Camembert, Muenster, or a snappy alpine-style cheese.
- Meats – Grilled bratwurst and sliced salami make the board hearty. You can also include other German-style sausages if available.
- Mustards – Offer a selection: sweet Bavarian mustard, a tangy dijon or medium mustard, a whole grain mustard, and a spicier hot mustard. A variety of mustards completes the Oktoberfest flavor profile.
- Pretzels and crackers – Include both soft and crunchy pretzels: soft pretzels for dipping and pretzel sticks or twists for texture. Add rye chips or sourdough-rye crackers for a toasty crunch.
- Extras – Small bowls of sauerkraut and cornichons add acidity. Add a German-style trail mix (called Studentenfutter) with nuts and dried fruit, fresh fruit like apple slices or blackberries, and pickled beets or asparagus if you like.

How to make it
- Arrange small bowls or ramekins and fill them with the different mustards, sauerkraut, cornichons, and any pickled vegetables. Place them on a large wooden board or platter as anchors for the layout.
- Place cheeses on the board (reserve the beer cheese dip for last). Slice harder cheeses and leave softer cheeses whole with spreaders.
- Chill the board briefly in the refrigerator while you prepare warm items.
- Simmer bratwurst in beer and a little sauerkraut on the stove for about 15 minutes to infuse flavor, then finish on the grill for a few minutes per side until nicely browned. Keep warm wrapped in foil.
- Heat frozen soft pretzels in the oven according to package directions or warm homemade pretzels if you prefer.
- Prepare the beer cheese dip on the stove, transfer it to a bowl, and add it to the board next to the soft pretzels for dipping.
- Slice the bratwurst and arrange the meat on the board alongside salami and other cured meats.
- Fill in gaps with pretzel breadsticks, pretzel slims, rye chips, trail mix, and fresh fruit. Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh herbs for color if desired. Serve immediately with a selection of German beers.

Throw an Oktoberfest party
If you want to go beyond the board, here are a few ideas to create a festive Oktoberfest atmosphere at home.
- Organize a beer tasting. Select a range of German beers—lagers, helles, märzen, and a dunkel—and serve them in small flights so guests can compare flavors. Provide tasting notes and encourage discussion about aroma, mouthfeel, and balance.
- Decorate the space. Use a blue-and-white color scheme, table runners, or simple Bavarian-style decor to create a cheerful setup. Paper plates and napkins with a festival motif can help if you want an easy cleanup option.
- Encourage costume fun. Invite guests to wear Bavarian-inspired outfits, such as dirndls or lederhosen, to make the event playful and memorable—but this is optional and purely for entertainment.
