I’ve made this recipe twice now. I’m an ingredient household & we very seldom go out to eat. This was definitely like a restaurant sauce!! I used it on Chicken Quesadillas & everyone loved it. Three of my adult sons were in the test kitchen. All gave it a “⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐” review. It’s now permanently in my recipe box. Thanks for sharing!

I’m a big fan of sauces and dips — the more the better. When I developed a steak quesadilla recipe, I knew the meal needed salsa and guacamole, but it also needed that signature creamy jalapeño quesadilla sauce. Since Taco Bell doesn’t sell this particular sauce by the bottle, making a homemade copycat is the next best thing.

This version is simple, uses common pantry ingredients, and takes only about five minutes to prepare. It’s rich, tangy, and slightly spicy from pickled jalapeños, and it really elevates any Mexican-style dish you pair it with.

Ingredients

For the exact ingredient quantities, see the recipe card below. The ingredients listed here are the essentials for recreating the creamy, zesty flavor:

  • Sour cream – half of the creamy base for tang and smooth texture.
  • Mayonnaise – the other half of the base for richness. If you prefer, you can use all sour cream, though the texture and flavor will be slightly lighter.
  • Pickled jalapeños – the key ingredient. Use both the chopped peppers and the pickling juice from the jar for authentic flavor.
  • Spices: paprika, ground cumin, garlic powder (or granulated garlic), onion powder (or granulated onion), and chili powder to season the sauce.
  • Salt – to taste, about ½ teaspoon is a good starting point.
  • Sugar – a small amount (about ½ teaspoon) helps balance the acidity and round out the flavor.

To make a spicy version, stir in ½ teaspoon (or more) of cayenne pepper.

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor. A compact blender like a Nutribullet works well.
  2. Blend until completely smooth. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes so the flavors can meld. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 10 days.

That’s it — just two steps to a creamy, tangy, jalapeño-forward sauce that closely mimics the quesadilla sauce you know and love.

Ways to use it

Serve this sauce alongside classic quesadillas, tacos, nachos, or taquitos. It’s also excellent drizzled over burrito bowls, used as a sandwich or burger spread, or even thinned slightly for a flavorful salad dressing.

To prepare a basic cheese quesadilla to pair with the sauce:

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Spray one side of a large flour tortilla with cooking spray and place the sprayed side down in the hot skillet. Add about 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese to half the tortilla and fold the other half over. Cook 3–4 minutes, flip, and cook another 3–4 minutes until golden and the cheese is melted. Cut into wedges and serve with the quesadilla sauce for dipping.

Other good pairings:

  • Quesadillas: steak, chicken, or vegetarian quesadillas
  • Nachos: layered chips topped with cheese, beans, or shredded meat
  • Tacos and burritos: grilled steak, chicken, mushroom, or breakfast-style fillings
  • Other Mexican-style dishes: fajitas, taquitos, and Mexican-inspired flatbreads

You can also use this sauce as a flavorful dressing for taco salads or as a dip for fresh vegetables.
