Key ingredients and substitution ideas

Below are notes on the main ingredients and a few simple swaps to customize the recipe. For the full ingredient list and measurements, see the recipe card below.

  • Diced jalapeños – Canned diced jalapeños are convenient and consistent in heat. Fresh jalapeños or roasted whole jalapeños (broiled, peeled, and diced) also work well and let you control the spice and smokiness.
  • Crescent roll dough – Using canned crescent dough keeps this recipe very quick. You can use crescent roll cans or crescent dough sheets; if using individual crescent rolls, press the perforations together to form continuous sheets before filling.
  • Butter + garlic – A simple garlic butter brushed on top enhances flavor and helps the tops brown. Use garlic powder for convenience or swap in a few cloves of crushed fresh garlic for a bolder profile.

Instructions

Step-by-step photos appear above to guide the process. The method is straightforward and scalable.

  1. Soften the cream cheese. Let the cream cheese sit at room temperature for about 15–20 minutes, or microwave for 15–20 seconds if you need to speed things up. In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded pepper jack, drained diced jalapeños, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  2. Mix until smooth. Use a sturdy spatula to fold the cheese and jalapeños together until well combined and spreadable.
  3. Prepare the dough. Unroll both cans (or sheets) of crescent roll dough on a clean surface. If using individual crescent rolls, press seams together to form two continuous sheets.
  4. Spread the filling. Divide the cheese mixture evenly and spread it over each sheet of dough, leaving a small border at the edges.
  5. Roll and slice. Starting from the short side, roll the dough up tightly over the filling into two logs. Use a serrated knife to slice each log into eight roughly 1-inch rounds, for a total of 16 rolls.
  6. Arrange in a baking dish. Place the rolls cut-side up in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. They should touch slightly but not be crowded.
  7. Brush with garlic butter. Mix melted butter with garlic powder (or minced fresh garlic) and brush evenly over the tops of the rolls.
  8. Bake. Bake at 375°F for 28–30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the filling is hot and melty. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Substitutions and additions

  • Mild version: Omit the jalapeños to enjoy the creamy, cheesy flavor without the heat.
  • Turn up the heat: Add extra diced jalapeños or swap pepper jack for a spicier cheddar if you prefer more kick.
  • Add bacon: Stir in ½ cup cooked, crumbled bacon for a smoky, salty crunch inside the rolls.
  • Add chicken: Mix in 1 cup cooked, shredded chicken to make these more substantial and turn them into a main course appetizer.
  • Dipping sauces: Serve with ranch, cilantro-lime sauce, or a creamy chipotle for dipping.

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Because these contain dairy, do not leave them at room temperature for extended periods.
  • Reheating — air fryer: Reheat from chilled in an air fryer at 400°F for about 5 minutes for a crisp exterior and warm filling.
  • Reheating — oven: Place rolls on a baking sheet and warm in a 400°F oven for 6–8 minutes.
  • Reheating — microwave: Warm individual rolls for 30–60 seconds until heated through.
  • Make ahead: The cheese filling can be mixed and refrigerated up to 3 days in advance. Assemble and bake when ready.
  • Crispier rolls: For a fully crisp exterior on every side, bake rolls separated on a parchment-lined sheet rather than together in a casserole; reduce bake time to about 10–12 minutes.
  • Scale it down: This recipe makes 16 rolls; to make 8, halve all ingredients and use one 8-ounce can of crescent dough.
