When I was 21, TGI Friday’s was my go-to spot: cheap happy hour, big flavors and one of my favorite menu items—Jack Daniel’s Chicken Strips. Even though it’s been years since I visited, I still crave that sweet, sticky sauce. I decided to recreate it at home and ended up using the sauce on everything—ribs, wings, chicken strips—you name it. It makes a wonderful glaze and a crowd-pleasing dipping sauce.

This sauce is straightforward to make: simmer the whiskey with aromatics, add the remaining ingredients, reduce until thick, then blend until smooth. It keeps well refrigerated for up to two weeks and the recipe yields enough to glaze several meals or double for meal prep.

Ingredients

Below are the main ingredients used in this Jack Daniel’s BBQ Sauce, why they matter, and simple substitutions you can make. For precise amounts, see the ingredient list further down.

  • Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey – provides a smoky, peppery backbone and deepens the sauce’s flavor. Cooking reduces and removes most alcohol, leaving the characteristic whiskey notes behind.
  • Onion – yellow onion is ideal for a mild, balanced base.
  • Garlic – fresh minced garlic brightens and deepens savory complexity.
  • Ketchup – the tomato base that gives the sauce body and familiar BBQ flavor.
  • Honey – creates the signature sticky-sweet texture. Swap molasses for a richer, slightly bitter caramel note.
  • Brown sugar – adds additional sweetness and a hint of molasses flavor.
  • Apple cider vinegar – balances the sweetness with acidity. White wine vinegar is a good substitute; white distilled vinegar will work but alters the taste slightly.
  • Tomato paste – boosts concentrated tomato flavor and thickness.
  • Worcestershire sauce – adds umami, tang and a touch of savory depth. If needed, substitute a small amount of soy sauce.
  • Yellow mustard – a touch of mustard brightens the flavor profile.
  • Salt + black pepper – to taste, for seasoning and balance.

Instructions

  1. Sauté onions and garlic in whiskey. Combine 1/2 cup Jack Daniel’s whiskey with diced onion and minced garlic in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer and cook until the onion is translucent and most of the liquid has reduced, about 8–10 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients. Stir in ketchup, honey (or molasses), brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, salt and black pepper.
  3. Simmer until thickened. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally until the sauce has reduced and thickened, about 15–20 minutes.
  4. Blend until smooth. Remove from heat, transfer to a blender or use an immersion blender, and puree until the sauce is smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  5. Store or use. Use the sauce right away, brush it on meats while grilling, or chill in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Recipe notes

  • Gluten considerations: Distillation removes gluten from whiskey, and the other ingredients are generally gluten-free. Always check the label on your Worcestershire sauce if you have a strict gluten-free requirement.
  • Alcohol content: Simmering reduces the alcohol, and most of it cooks off during the reduction step, leaving flavor rather than alcohol.
  • Storage: Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Label with the date and use within two weeks for best freshness.
  • Yield: This recipe makes roughly 4 cups (about 32 ounces) of sauce. You can easily double the recipe if you want extra for the week.

Ways to use it

This Jack Daniel’s BBQ Sauce is a versatile finishing and dipping sauce. Use it anywhere you would use a classic BBQ sauce:

  • Ribs: brush on baby back ribs or spare ribs during the last minutes of grilling or baking.
  • Chicken: toss with wings, brush on grilled chicken, or glaze chicken strips for a sticky finish.
  • Pork: baste chopped pork, pulled pork or pork chops for a sweet-savory glaze.
  • Sides and salads: stir into baked beans or drizzle over a BBQ-style chicken salad for extra flavor.
  • Meatloaf, meatballs and burgers: spread on meatloaf or burgers as a finishing sauce or mix into meatball glazes.
