The air fryer is one of the most reliable kitchen tools for fast, even cooking. This Air Fryer Salmon method produces moist, flaky fillets with a beautifully seasoned exterior in about 7 minutes of active cooking time. It’s an ideal choice for busy evenings when you want a healthy, satisfying meal without much fuss.

This recipe is naturally gluten‑free and dairy‑free. It’s quick to prepare—just a few simple ingredients—and works well with many seasonings and side dishes. For consistent flavor, use a salmon seasoning blend with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder, or swap in your favorite rub for variation.

Ingredients

  • Salmon – about 20 ounces total (a little over one pound), cut into fillets. Use two larger fillets (~10 oz each) or four smaller fillets (~5 oz each).
  • Olive oil – 1 teaspoon, or use your preferred vegetable oil.
  • Salmon seasoning – about 1 tablespoon. A simple homemade rub of salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder works well and stores easily.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer. Set the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Season the salmon. Rub each fillet lightly with olive oil, then coat both the flesh and edges with the salmon seasoning.
  3. Air fry. Place the fillets skin-side down in a single layer with space between them so air can circulate. Cook at 400°F for about 7 minutes. Avoid flipping the fillets while cooking—air frying cooks evenly without turning.
  4. Check doneness. Salmon is done when it flakes easily with a fork or reaches your preferred internal temperature (see tips below). Remove from the air fryer and let rest briefly before serving.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Leftover salmon is excellent cold on salads or in grain bowls.

Recipe tips

  • Adjust time for thickness. If the thickest part of a fillet is under 1 inch, reduce cook time to about 5 minutes.
  • Target temperatures. Salmon can be cooked to 110°F for rare up to 145°F for well done. Because carryover cooking will raise the temperature after you remove it, pull the fillets about 5–10°F below your target.
  • Don’t flip the fillets. Salmon is delicate. Flipping risks breaking the fillets; the circulating air cooks them evenly from all sides.
  • Keep the skin on. Cooking with the skin on helps retain moisture. The flesh will lift away from the skin easily after cooking if you prefer not to eat the skin.
  • Even-size fillets cook best. Try to choose pieces similar in size so they finish at the same time. If a fillet is much smaller, cook it separately for a shorter time.
  • Leave space between fillets. Air flow is essential—avoid crowding. If your air fryer basket is too small, cook in batches.
  • Seasoning variations. Swap the salmon seasoning for cajun, lemon pepper, Italian, or blackened seasoning to change the flavor profile.

Make it with frozen salmon

You can cook frozen salmon in the air fryer with excellent results by starting at a lower temperature so the fillet thaws and cooks through without burning the exterior. Midway through cooking, brush the surface with oil and apply seasoning so it adheres.

Frozen salmon method: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F. Cook frozen fillets for 5 minutes, then brush with olive oil and sprinkle on seasoning. Increase temperature to 400°F and continue cooking for 6–10 more minutes, depending on thickness and desired doneness. Use a thermometer or flake test to confirm doneness.

What to serve with it

Pair the salmon with roasted, steamed, or fresh sides for a balanced meal. While the salmon cooks, steam vegetables, toss a salad, or roast a vegetable side in the oven or air fryer.

Suggested sides:

  • Roasted cauliflower
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Steamed cabbage
  • Smashed broccoli
  • Air fryer roasted potatoes
  • Baked sweet potatoes
  • Grilled Caesar salad
  • Italian or blue cheese salad
  • White rice or cauliflower rice
