How to Set Up a DIY Bagel Bar for Brunch

Want an easy way to host an unforgettable brunch? Create a Bagel Bar. Guests will enjoy building their own bagels with a variety of cream cheeses and toppings—perfect for feeding a crowd and great for both kids and adults.

Pair your Bagel Bar with a Mimosa Bar or a simple juice station and you’ll have a relaxed, festive brunch that’s easy to assemble and even easier to enjoy.

I love hosting, but I also want to enjoy the gathering. That’s why I rely on “build your own” stations—like taco bars and drink bars—that let guests serve themselves while the host gets to mingle. A Bagel Bar is one of the easiest and most crowd-pleasing options for brunch. It’s quick to set up, flexible for different dietary needs, and looks beautiful on the table.

With a selection of bagel flavors and several cream cheese varieties, plus fresh fruits, vegetables, smoked fish and other proteins, your guests can mix and match to create their perfect bagel. Most of the prep can be done the night before, and the actual setup takes about 30 minutes.

What you’ll need

  • Various bagel flavors – Offer at least 3–4 kinds, mixing sweet and savory (for example: everything, onion, cinnamon raisin, blueberry). Mini bagels are a nice option for kids.
  • Assorted cream cheeses – Choose several flavors such as plain, onion & chive, garden vegetable and honey walnut to give guests tasty pairings.
  • Vegetables
    • Sliced tomatoes
    • Sliced cucumbers
    • Microgreens, arugula or spinach
    • Sliced red onions
    • Capers
  • Meats & proteins
    • Smoked salmon
    • Cooked bacon (regular or candied)
    • Thinly sliced deli roast beef
    • Scrambled or hard-cooked eggs (kept warm in a slow cooker)
  • Fruits
    • Strawberries
    • Blueberries
    • Raspberries
  • Juice or drinks (optional) – Carafes of orange, grapefruit or cranberry juice are simple additions.
  • Small appliances & serving tools
    • Toaster
    • Slow cooker to keep eggs warm
    • Ramekins for cream cheese, fruit and capers
    • Cheese or butter knives for spreading
    • Spoons for fruit and capers, tongs for meats and veggies
    • Cutting boards for arranging meats and vegetables
  • Display & setup supplies – Bagel stands, baskets or a tiered stand; brown butcher paper or craft paper as a washable base; sharpies for labeling; plates for guests; a simple sign to label the bar.

Step by step instructions

  1. Cook the bacon and prepare the eggs.
    • For bacon: place strips on a wire rack over a foil-lined baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 15–20 minutes. This can be done the night before.
    • For scrambled eggs: whisk 12 eggs with 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring for 3–5 minutes, then transfer to a slow cooker set to warm.
  2. Roll out a length of brown butcher paper (about 4–5 feet) across your table or counter to create the base of the bar.
  3. Arrange the bagels on stands, a cutting board, or in baskets. Pre-slice bagels if they aren’t already sliced.
  4. Label each bagel variety on the butcher paper with a sharpie so guests know their options.
  5. Place cooked meats (bacon, smoked salmon, roast beef) on a cutting board and set tongs nearby. Label each meat on the paper.
  6. Slice vegetables and arrange them on a board with capers in a ramekin; add tongs for serving.
  7. Portion fruit into ramekins with small spoons and place them on the bar.
  8. Transfer cream cheeses into ramekins with spreaders and label each flavor on the paper.
  9. Set the toaster and slow cooker of eggs on the table. Add plates and a sign that reads “Bagel Bar.”
  10. Optional: add carafes of juice, a mimosa station or a pitcher of Bloody Marys if you’re serving cocktails.

Tips and tricks

  • Always use fresh bagels. Purchase them the day before or the morning of your event for the best texture and flavor.
  • Pre-slice bagels. If they aren’t already sliced, do this in advance so guests can grab and build immediately.
  • Prep ahead. Slice veggies the night before and store them covered on the cutting board. Cook bacon the night before if needed to save time.
  • Label clearly. Writing the names of bagel types, cream cheeses and proteins on the butcher paper keeps the table tidy and helps guests choose quickly.
