Crispy Bread Bowl Filled with Buffalo Chicken Dip

Everyone’s favorite buffalo chicken dip baked right into a sourdough bread bowl — an ideal appetizer for parties, game day, or a casual weekend gathering.

Buffalo Chicken Dip Bread Bowl

Super Bowl Sunday is almost here, and I’m preparing for my annual game-day party in my new home. The place isn’t completely finished, but with a little creativity and a “make it work” attitude, I can still host and serve a crowd-pleasing spread. One of my favorite twists this year is turning classic buffalo chicken dip into a warm, shareable sourdough bread bowl.

Buffalo-flavored recipes are staples at my parties, and I typically include variations like buffalo pickle chips, cheddar biscuits with buffalo flavor, and honey mustard buffalo meatballs. After seeing how popular a caramelized pear and baked brie sourdough bread bowl was during the holidays, it made sense to bake my buffalo chicken dip straight in a bread loaf. It’s the same dip you love, but served in an eye-catching, no-fuss vessel that cuts down on dishes and makes serving effortless.

Why this version works so well: the sourdough crust holds up in the oven, the interior stays soft and scoopable, and the bread itself becomes part of the experience once you slice the removed top into cubes for dipping. It’s great for crowds, travels well if you need to bring it to a potluck, and looks impressive with minimal effort.

Here are a few other buffalo-inspired favorites you might enjoy alongside this dip:

  1. Buffalo Turkey Meatball Subs
  2. One-Pot Buffalo Chicken Cheesy Tortellini
  3. Buffalo Shrimp Tacos
  4. Buffalo Cheesy Meatloaf
  5. One-Pot Buffalo Taco Spaghetti

Ingredients

  • 1 round sourdough loaf
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup bleu cheese dressing
  • 2 cups cooked and shredded chicken
  • 1/2 cup buffalo sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup crumbled bleu cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice about 1/2 inch off the top of the sourdough loaf and set the top aside.
  3. Carefully cut a circle from the center of the loaf, leaving the bottom intact to form a bowl. Remove the interior bread and reserve it for serving.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, bleu cheese dressing, shredded chicken, and buffalo sauce. Mix until evenly combined. Taste and add more buffalo sauce if you prefer it spicier.
  5. Fill the hollowed bread loaf with the buffalo chicken mixture, smoothing the top.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled bleu cheese evenly over the top.
  7. Place the filled bread bowl on a baking sheet and cover it with the reserved top piece of bread.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the dip is hot and the cheese on top is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the oven. Slice the top piece of bread into cubes and cut slits around the edge of the bread bowl about every inch to make it easy to pull the bread apart for dipping.
  10. Serve immediately, using the bread cubes and the bread bowl edge for scooping the warm dip.

Tips and Variations

  • For a milder version, reduce the buffalo sauce and add more cream cheese or shredded chicken to balance the heat.
  • If you don’t have bleu cheese dressing, ranch dressing can be used as an alternative.
  • Try adding chopped green onions or a sprinkle of chopped parsley on top for color and freshness.
  • To make the dip ahead: prepare the filling, refrigerate in an airtight container, then fill and bake the bread bowl just before serving.
  • To reheat leftovers: transfer dip to an ovenproof dish, cover with foil, and warm at 350°F until heated through. Toast reserved bread cubes separately to restore crispness.
