If you want a warm, comforting dinner that’s also festive, this Heart Shaped Italian Meatloaf is a perfect choice. The classic Italian seasoning, two kinds of meat, and two cheeses give it a rich flavor and moist texture. It makes a great Valentine’s Day centerpiece, but it’s equally suited to a cozy family meal any night of the week.
This recipe is friendly for cooks of all skill levels. You can press the mixture into a heart-shaped pan for a neat presentation, use a cake pan, or simply form the loaf by hand on a baking sheet. When not celebrating a special occasion, bake it in a traditional meatloaf pan for the same delicious results.

Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 cup diced onion
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp dried parsley
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp dried basil
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup marinara sauce (use your favorite, or a homemade marinara)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 4–5 minutes, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute more, then remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
In a large mixing bowl combine the ground pork and ground beef. Add the cooked onion and garlic, dried parsley, dried oregano, dried basil, kosher salt, black pepper, eggs, breadcrumbs, and grated Parmesan. Mix gently until everything is evenly incorporated—avoid overworking the meat to keep the loaf tender.
Stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese. Press the mixture into a heart-shaped springform or cake pan, or shape it into a heart by hand on a lined baking sheet. If you prefer, form the mixture into a classic loaf shape and place it in a loaf pan.
Bake the meatloaf for 25 minutes. Remove it from the oven and spoon the marinara sauce evenly over the top. Return the meatloaf to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the center reaches 160°F (71°C). Let the meatloaf rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing—this helps it hold together and redistributes the juices.
For a playful finishing touch, garnish the warm meatloaf with baby spinach leaves or small heart-shaped mozzarella pieces cut with a small cookie cutter.

What to serve with it
This Italian meatloaf pairs beautifully with a variety of sides. Serve slices over cooked pasta with extra marinara and a dusting of Parmesan for a hearty plate. Garlic bread, a side salad, or steamed vegetables complement the flavors nicely. You can also serve it alongside roasted potatoes or a simple green vegetable like sautéed broccoli or green beans.
Leftovers are great reheated and make excellent sandwiches—place a slice on crusty bread with extra sauce and cheese. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days or freeze portions for longer storage.
