This simple, flavorful approach makes preparing a whole turkey approachable and stress-free—perfect if you’re hosting Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving and want a tender, juicy centerpiece without complicated prep. The bright cranberry jalapeño relish pairs beautifully with roasted turkey, offering a balance of sweet, tart and spicy notes that wake up each bite.

If you want to simplify the process, an oven-ready whole turkey removes the need to thaw, brine, or pre-season. An oven-ready bird can go straight from the freezer into a cooking bag and into the oven, which helps keep the meat moist and cuts down on prep time. The cooking bag also helps distribute heat evenly, so the turkey cooks reliably.

While the turkey cooks and rests, prepare a quick cranberry jalapeño relish on the stove. Cooked briefly, cranberries burst and meld with sugar, lime and fresh jalapeño for a relish that can be served warm or chilled. It’s an easy way to add a homemade touch that complements the roasted bird.

Servings & Time

  • Serves: about 10 people
  • Prep time: 30 minutes
  • Cook time: approximately 3½–4 hours (depending on size)
  • Total time: about 4 hours 30 minutes (including rest)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Remove the frozen turkey from its outer packaging, keeping it inside the cooking bag provided with the oven-ready turkey.
  3. Place the turkey in a roasting pan with sides at least 2 inches tall to catch any juices.
  4. Carefully cut six ½-inch slits in the top of the cooking bag to allow steam to escape, and gently pull the bag away from the turkey so it isn’t clinging to the skin.
  5. Position the roasting pan so there is room above and on the sides for the bag to expand while cooking.
  6. Roast in the preheated oven until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast reads 165°F. This typically occurs between 3 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours for an 11–13 lb bird; start checking the temperature after 3 hours because the final hour can cause temperatures to rise quickly.
  7. When the turkey reaches 165°F in the breast, remove it from the oven and set it aside, still in the bag, to rest for 15 minutes. Resting allows the juices to redistribute and makes carving easier.
  8. While the turkey rests, make the cranberry jalapeño relish: combine cranberries, minced jalapeños, sugar, water, lime juice and lime zest in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
  9. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries begin to burst and the sugar dissolves. When the cranberries start to pop, remove the pan from the heat and mash the berries to your preferred consistency. Taste and adjust heat or sweetness if desired.
  10. The relish may be served warm immediately or chilled in the refrigerator and served cold—both are delicious.
  11. After the turkey has rested, cut open the top of the oven bag, remove the turkey and slice. Arrange the meat on a platter and serve with the cranberry jalapeño relish alongside your favorite sides.
