Banh Mi Pizza topped with sesame-ginger ground pork, carrots, jalapeños, cilantro and Sriracha

I was craving something different than the ordinary pizza and decided to turn a classic Vietnamese banh mi into a pizza. After a few small experiments—adjusting when to add the raw toppings and refining the sauce—I landed on a version that keeps the bright, fresh flavors of a banh mi while delivering the comfort of a warm, cheesy pizza. The key is a simple sesame-ginger sauce, quick-cooked ground pork, and adding the crunchy, pickled-style vegetables after baking so they stay crisp.

How to make it

To make this Banh Mi Pizza, whisk together a sesame-ginger sauce that doubles as a glaze and finishing sauce. Cook the ground pork with half of that sauce so it absorbs the flavors, then par-bake the pizza dough. After the initial bake, spread the remaining sauce on the crust, add the pork and mozzarella, and return to the oven until the cheese is melted and golden. Finish the pizza with fresh, crunchy julienned carrots, thinly sliced red onion, jalapeños and cilantro, and a drizzle of Sriracha for heat.

What goes in a banh mi?

A traditional banh mi sandwich combines savory pork, pickled or fresh shredded carrots, fresh cilantro, sliced chilies or chili sauce, and often thinly sliced onion on a crisp baguette. On this pizza, those flavors are adapted to a flatbread format: savory sesame-ginger pork and melted cheese on the crust, topped with fresh vegetables and herbs after baking so the contrast of hot and cold, soft and crunchy remains true to the original sandwich.

Ingredients

Sesame-Ginger Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed

Banh Mi Pizza

  • 10 oz pizza dough (one ball)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1/4 cup julienned carrots
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onions
  • 1/4 cup sliced jalapeños
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, honey, sesame oil, minced ginger, crushed red pepper and crushed garlic. Reserve half of this sauce for finishing the pizza.
  3. Roll or stretch the pizza dough into a circle or rectangle on a lightly floured surface and transfer to a baking stone or sheet pan. Par-bake the dough for about 8 minutes until it starts to set but is not fully browned.
  4. While the dough bakes, heat 1 tsp sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground pork and cook, breaking it up, for about 5 minutes until browned.
  5. Pour half of the sesame-ginger sauce over the pork and cook for an additional 2–3 minutes so the pork absorbs the flavors. Remove from heat.
  6. Remove the par-baked crust from the oven. Spread the remaining sauce over the crust, then evenly distribute the cooked pork and top with shredded mozzarella.
  7. Bake the pizza for another 6–8 minutes until the cheese is melted and edges are golden.
  8. Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately top with julienned carrots, thinly sliced red onions and jalapeños. Drizzle with Sriracha and sprinkle with fresh cilantro. Slice and serve warm.
